The second competition of The 1998 Flying Disc Dog Open season took place
in Kansas City, Missouri at The 15th Annual Spirit Festival on September 5th 1998. A big doggone thank you to Tim Smith and all the Spirit Festival organizers for allowing the Open at the
festival. Their generosity and support made this a fun and very exciting event for all who attended. 19 competitors, 10 pro's and 9 amateurs, came to the ball field and the fur
began to fly in the hot and humid conditions. The judges and competitors held a meeting minutes before the competition to discuss the weather situation. After a vote, they decided to shorten the competition to
one round of each event. In case of a tie, an extra freestyle round would be performed by the Pro's and an extra Obstacle course by the Am's. Cynthia Sera Calhoun and Air Dexter
deserve honorable mention for an impressive comeback. After two events, Distance & Obstacle Course, Cynthia was 5 points behind Tony and gained it all back with a solid freestyle performance,
which forced a tie breaker for second place. Hot and tired both Cynthia Sera Calhoun/Air Dexter and Tony Kelso/Blazin Bernie hit the field one more time with Cynthia and Air Dexter coming out on top
in a tie-breaker by 2.5 points. Tony and Blazin Bernie had the most points on the Obstacle Course scoring on five out of six stations for 11 points. Another honorable mention goes to Amateur John Ridings and Reddick
scoring on four out of six stations for 8 points. New to the Pro-division was a cash purse of $1500.00 split between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. Congratulations to our winners, Brian Lamky and Tatiana,
who took the top dog honors and $800.00; 2nd Cynthia Sera Calhoun/Air Dexter $450.00; 3rd Tony Kelso/Blazin Bernie $250.00. After the competition, everyone enjoyed
the great music and food at the Spirit Festival. It was a great way to end the day. Thanks to The Spirit Festival for the cash prize donation and these fine companies for
supplying product for the prize bags; Air Major Travel Duffel, Bolle', Cool Paws, IAMS, Mendota, Pet Goods, TennisBone, PowerBone, GoFrrr Ball and Zip Specialty.
Finally a big doggone thank you to all our disc dog competitors and judging staff.
