The Central Leg / Texas State Championship took place deep in the heart of Texas on October 27th at River Legacy Park in Arlington. Teams from Oregon, Colorado
, Oklahoma, Alabama and Georgia were ready to take the field on a beautiful autumn day. The weather gods smiled upon us with great conditions; temps in the mid 80’s and a
slight breeze. Congratulations to 2 time FDDO and New Texas State Champions Pro Chuck Middleton & Donnie, who dominated from start to finish scoring on 6 of 6 stations on the OC for 16 huge points.
On the Distance Course, Chuck and Donnie pushed the drama to the limit by missing their first two attempts and setting the stage for extreme pressure on the third and final
throw. A hush came over the crowd as Chuck concentrated, knowing this competition came down to this last throw. The toss went out with all his experience, practice and pride
on the line. Donnie kept his eyes on the disc as if sensing how important this catch was, and moving at full speed, he followed the disc as it sailed out to zone 5 and made the catch as the crowd let out the
largest cheer of the day. Second place in the Pro Division went to Paul West & Sport, who had two great runs on the Distance and OC Courses, but fell just two and a half points short in Freestyle. A tie for Third place in the Pro
Division was between first time FDDO competitor Gary Shockley & Kodiak, who produced the second best score of the day on the OC with 15 big points on a fantastic run and Bob Evans who came ready to
play on his home turf improving greatly on the OC, no longer his Achilles heel. The biggest surprise of the day was a sharply dressed Zain Nail & Kaia and their
very much improved Freestyle routine. Zain & Kaia scored five 5’s, 3 of them in the final freestyle round. Picking it up in their second Freestyle Round was JD
Platt & Galaxy impressing the judges with two 5’s by exploding with hip hop energy. Other notable Pro performances go out to “Dancing” Damian Noud &
Kristal and Pam Martin & Pilot, both real crowd pleasers with their great “style”. In the Amateur Division congratulations go out to First Place finisher Billy Hasty &
Star, who led the Am’s on the OC with 10 points, nudging out Chris Dyer & Reilley by 3 points. It was a great duel to the end. Finally, a big doggone thank you
for the wonderful hospitality of the hosting Dallas Dog & Disc Club, who provided breakfast and pizza for lunch for all the staff and competitors. Also to Guy
Mayberry for believing in the FDDO and bringing it home to Texas from his first experience years ago in Colorado. Finally to the great staff and community volunteers who
helped to make this event run smoothly and allow all the competitors the opportunity to compete through all the events. They were Jennifer Kernodle, Darla Nail, Marilyn Evans, Kim Hasty, Lisa Middleton, Perry West, Hector
Gomez (MC), Mark Wood, Steven Heeter and to anyone else who I have not mentioned here. Thank you one and all and God Bless.
