On November 4th, the final event for the Flying Disc Dog Open
2000 season took place at River Legacy Park in Arlington, Texas. Even though the local and national newscasts predicted inclement weather all weekend for the Dallas area, we prepared the field for competition on Friday evening among
the rain drops. When we awoke Saturday morning, the weather Gods smiled on us. The rain had stopped and the day turned out to be great for a disc dog contest
with temperatures in the mid 60’s, little to no wind, and overcast skies. A dedicated group of local disc dog teams showed up to compete, and the judging
staff allowed five Pro division teams the opportunity to compete with a second dog, and one team with a third. Congratulations to our 2000 Texas FDDO Champions Pro team Chuck Middleton & Donnie, who came ready
to compete dressed in sharp team outfits. They impressed the judges in all categories of the Freestyle event and went on to score the highest marks in the Artistic Impression category. They also had the longest Distance toss of the day, a 62 yard bomber for 6
points, and a respectable 9 point run on the OC. One of the biggest surprises of the day came from Pro team Paul West & Super Sport, who managed to take 3rd despite a 0 in the
Distance event. Paul & Super Sport cruised through the OC with 12 points and had the second highest score in the Freestyle event. Other great performances came from 2nd place finishers Pro
team Jason Kernodle & Trevor, who scored 11 points on the OC, 4 points on the Distance event and two solid Freestyle routines. The best round of the day on the OC came from Pro team Guy
Mayberry & Sega, who hit on 6 of 6 stations for 14 points. Pro team Bob Evans & Nick, despite the highest marks in Freestyle and the second highest score in the Distance event, had a let
down on the OC with only a 3 point run that placed him in 5th. First place in the Amateur Division went to Am team Rebecca Richards & Chig, who hit on 5 of 6 stations in the OC scoring 9
points. This was Rebecca’s first time on the OC, and her style and timing looked like she had done this event for years. Many thanks to the Dallas
Dog & Disc Club for securing the great field, and to Karen Ferguson for helping out on the judging staff. Also, a big doggone thank you to Head Judge, George Vogel, who called it as
he saw it and worked hard before, during, and after the event. For those of you who don’t know, George and his high flying Boarder Collie, Abby, were the “98” Pro Division Champions in
Lyons, Colorado. A very special thanks to
Brad Harris and Brad Otto for helping to run this event. Their friendship and support has made this event fun and special. And finally, a big dog thank you to all of our sponsors for giving
us the opportunity to present this competition nationally.
